Combo Help

Post  MBBFord on September 25th 2010, 3:50 pm

Trying to help a friend get the best combo possible for his motor.

Details are limited, but I should be able to give enough to get the jist of it.
96 F250 EFI 460 4x4 mud truck but driven on the road every now and then, no DD.
Motor was completely rebuilt, I'm thinking it has a 521 stroker kit and was bored slightly, was told it's a 523.

The machine shop that did the work, obviously doesn't specialize in Ford motors.... so I'm coming here to get the real answers.

They talked him into getting procomp aluminum heads.
He has the stock EFI intake.
Ceremic Headers 1 3/4" primary (a little small)
Not sure of exact cam.

The plan now is to go Carb. Looking for more power.
I've got a general understanding, but really want to know what you guess would suggest.

I know the heads and intake are really holding him back, so...

What should be done with the heads? Port and better valves?

Intake? Any suggestions

Carb? 850+

Cam? His current cam is ok (unsure of specs, nothing extream though), just need more power.

Thanks for any help.

I'd replace the whole top end, procomp heads are pretty much junk, the need alot to make any power. I'd try and hunt some a429 or TFS heads

Unless I'm mistaken (that's never happened before - yeah right) the Pro Crap heads will have a very poor port match with the stock EFI intake. Or are our ever enterprising Chinese "friends" chasing that market as well?

For the power he's wanting, I don't think a stealth intake will quite be enough, so I was thinking something along the lines of a Victor, but need some opinions here.

The stock EFI intake was port matched, but still very restricting.

He isn't much help on details, I'm guessing his CR is around 10:1, but I'm not sure. The machine shop told him to run 93 octaine. He doesn't have a clue what kind of pistons, or dish....

He's hoping for somewhere around 600 hp, but realisticly I don't think he's ready to spend the money to do it, even though I think it'd be very possible with new heads.

I wish he would of asked for my help the first go round, I would of made him get TFS heads instead of the pro comps, but I don't see him spending $1,500 an heads right now.
I know pro comps are junk, but if he's gonning to keep them, what can be done? A three angle valve job, and porting has got to be an improvement right....

Mafia intake, Dommie, TFS Streets, 2" headers, and a matching cam would be a huge improvement. Very Happy One would need to know if the short block is capable of handling the power this combo could produce though. Cool

If 600 is the goal, start by getting rid of those heads and machine shop............... Very Happy

I would think that with all the cleanup portwork, valvejob and such i honestly think better heads are in order, as well as a victor or mafia intake if money permits. Victors and scj heads can be had for reasonable prices

haha, I've told him not to get anything done unless he talks to me about it first, and not to go back to the machine shop.

Ok, he's not gonna like hearing this, but I have a feeling his dreams of 600 are shot unless he can find used heads.

He doesn't know many details (pretty sad), but I know the motor was completely rebuilt and everything was replaced. Wish he'd know something about what strocker kit and pistons were used. Getting him to contact the machine shop to find something out.
I believe the block is built right, just horrible heads and intake.

What size Dominator carb would you guys suggest?
It's used in mud bogs not mud drags.

The Procomp stuff needs a whole lot of work (Quality Sucks on the assembled stuff, Factory Valve Job and Port / Chamber design sucks) and IMO just isn't worth the effort if your looking for power.

You need to figure out what he has now (other than the heads)

For 600 HP on a 521" Look at the Ford crate motor program

10:1, Kaase SCJ heads, Ect.
