Nitrous on a small 500cu

Post  jones on November 1st 2010, 10:55 am

I'm just wondering if someone was going to build a small nitrous engine using race gas what is some of the things you see that cause the largest headaches.

2 stage setup on a 500cu ish engine?

Make sure you have good compression height on piston
good ring pack
.043 backcut top ring
.043 napier second ring
3/16 oil ring 20lb

with two kits aluminum rod preferred

SOFT CHAMBERS ON HEADS

Also a lot of attention will have to be payed on the camshaft, and cylinder heads.

Ok, when you say "soft chambers" what does that mean?

Soft Chambers is a deal that started on the Yates SBF head, Buck Racing engines in NC has a cnc program that does this on Heavy N20 applications they take the head and macine the chambers out to the spark plug this give more quench area for the N20 and slows the burn rate. this is not good for a NA application but its the cats meow for N20. by doing this you can bump compression up with piston and small dome and still have good ring placement and the compression you want. we try for at least .080 quench on steel rods and .100 on alluminum rod with about 14.1-14.50 compression ratio spraying 400-600hp worth of N20 by doing this this gives the piston manafacture room to eliminate edges, hot spots etc in the piston design. One guy that runs with us just ran 4.91 on a 275 drag radial in GA setting the world Record stock suspension car with yates heads and 2 kits

Understandable, I was just meaning the concept behind the differances not the exact thing. I have yet to fully understand what everyone means by quench. Everyones def seems a little different.
