Stock block limits

Post  Race Ready Fabrications on Tue 25 Jan - 22:51

So I've been searching and asking around and haven't really gotten any solid answers. What are the limits of a stock block on horsepower and rpm? I will be running the same short block that I've ran for the last two seasons, new additions are cam, intake and TFS streets by Charlie Evans. Basically I need to know whether or not I'm building a ticking time bomb. Here are the details of my build, let me know what you think.

D9TE block, two bolt mains, not filled.
4.390 bore
4.140 stroke, cast crank
Venolia 6.700 aluminum rods
Ross 14:1 pistons
Comp solid roller speced by Blake Cartwright
.786 .798
274 282 duration @.050
108 LSA
TFS raised port Mafia heads by Charlie Evans
Intake Exhaust(no pipe)
.100 70 52
.200 150 107
.300 238 150
.400 301 184
.500 344 215
.600 365 250
.700 376 262
.750 381 265
.800 385 267
Intake: new trick flow mafia intake.
1050 holley...for now.

I'd be more concerned about the cast crank than the block.

Keep conservitive on the tune (don't get greedy) and maintain / inspect everything from time to time.

If it was a cast 4.3 or 4.5 I might have a little concern, but the 4.140 has a good bit of main to crank pin overlap. With it being two bolt, he may walk the caps if the tune is off , but the block will be fine. JMHO

A half filled stock block will sustain 900 horsepower and 7,500 RPM would not be a problem as long as good fuel is used and you keep it totally clear of any detonation.

You shouldn't have to shift at much over 7000........ Id start at about 6400 and add 200 per pass untill it starts to fall off or not improve, but shouldn't need much over 7000.

Given the 4.14" stroke combined with the aluminum rods, the general peak hp and rpm estimations, you ought not have any issues assuming good tune. Bad tune can hurt a lot less of an engine combo in a stock block, and good tune can take a lot more hp than your block will see in this particular build.

We just freshened a cast crankshaft 4.3 stroke engine, 700+ hp, 2-bolt block, stock main bolts, 3 years of 6000 rpm. It showed ZERO cap walk. You just need to listen to what your engine will tell you and respond accordiingly. Cool

Paul

p.s.: It's your valve springs that will be requiring all the attention, don't ignore checking and rechecking them on a regular basis in this combo!

Stock Block Limits

Post  onequickstang on Thu 27 Jan - 21:37

I know of a guy who's running a 532 with a stock 4 bolt CJ block making over 900 HP on motor and hits it with 500 HP of spray. I know it's not the same as your's, but hopefully it'll help. I'm curious as well. i'm building a 514 very similar to yours except with a tunnel ram and dual dommies and I'm hoping to hit it with some spray too. it's a 2 bolt block with a girdle.

2 bolt

Post  Mark Laczo on Fri 28 Jan - 2:55

Rob,

Good luck with that !

A 2 bolt main with a girdle is like a bandaid on a blister. Your buddy with the 4 bolt caps knows whats going on you should follow his build or advice !!!!
