Internally balanced 466? Empty Internally balanced 466?

Post  blu69MachI November 15th 2011, 1:24 pm

I have a 466 in a car that I had purchased.
I noticed that it doesnt have a balancer, it only has a 2 groove pulley. So, I'm assuming its an internally balanced engine. My question is do I need to just put timing tape on the pulley to see where the timing is currently? I never messed around with an internally balance engine before and I'm use to having the balancer to adjust timing.
The previous owner says it is a 429 with 460 crank and rods.

It's a little frustrating because he hands me a stack of reciepts and they contradict what he has told me about the engine.
He says 9qt pan but I have reciept for 8 qt.
he says KB pistons but I have a reciept for TRW forged pistons
He says He thinks it a voodoo cam and I have a reciept for Ford Motorsport cam
All the reciepts have his name and info on them so I have been just going by the reciepts.
I'm starting to think that he didnt build the engine but only purchased the parts because when I first listened to the engine it sounded like it had loose rockers and he told me it's suppose to sound that way and that they have been all locked down so no adjustment is ever needed. But I knew better because I have always had to readjust valves with poly locks. So first thing I did when I got home was pull off the valve covers and they were loose, so I readjusted them. I apologize for getting off track but I think I'm just venting now. lol

I don't know what your 2 groove pulley is bolted too. A internal balance 460 has a balancer, the external balance engines just run a hatchet weight behind the balancer, both use the same balancer.

Also ,the block and rods are the same in a 429 and 460 ,the only diffrence is the crank and pistons.

It's a heavy metal pulley like cast iron and it uses the normal crank bolt. It just has two belt grooves. I just didnt see any timing marks or tab, never seen a balancer like this if, that's what it is.

Ok I figured it out that the pulley is actually the balancer. I had searched before posting but I wasnt using the correct verbage. This is my first experience with BBF and it has been entertaining so far. Thank you for the reply

Jesse is right 68 429 balancer might have been used in 69 also. They do have timing marks on them but are hard to see. You can replace it with a regular balancer unless the pulleys are being used to drive the power steering and alt.
