Making a A460 block Badder!
Last year we hurt one of our A460 blocks , we run a Ton of nitrous and keep putting are Toes over the edge as you might say !! time to fix it and get back in the game ! This block was our 632 C460 headed motor , melted some pistons . Time for the fix !! Bore from 4.603 to 4.799 for some dimensional 4.801" Ductile Iron sleeves from Darton Sleaves . I did this on my 600 20 years ago and these sleeves are harder than hobo shit !!and hold a ring seal great and you'll wear out the rings long before the cylinder wall. sleeving all 8 holes at the same time makes it so at a later date if and when we burn up a hole real bad we can change the sleeve and not move the cylinders around beside it , the reason I use the sleeve for an AR Ford is the flange mounts nice in the lathe to put a .050" step on the bottom of the sleeve so it can not move ! Gave my ol' triple 7 Van Norman a workout , I don't like to over work it so I only cut .015" at a time which makes for a pile of passes through each hole !! and then leaving the hole and the cutting tool to cool to ambient temp for the final .005-.007" cut to get the crush fit right takes time , I have 2 tool holders with replaceable carbide cutters so it speeds up cool down time .Started 3 pm yesterday on the block and it's ready for the sleeves tonight at 9pm! but time for a beer !
Some pics!
the 3" dia pipe is used as the anchor for the boring bar
the Darton sleeves 4.801" od 4.485 Id so theres more boring going to need to happen to get back to 4.605"and there hard cutting!

Re: Making a A460 block Badder!
to be honest I cut the all 8 holes from 4.605 to 4.799" on one edge of a new cutter ! ( 6 sided )( 7.5 hrs) now the ductile iron sleeves are a different story as it will take 3 edges to get to the final cut each hole !! from 4.485" to 4.603" with the final hone from 4.603" to 4.605" and it hones hard also!!

Re: Making a A460 block Badder!
we'll use up 2 maybe 3 set of stones to get to 4.606" , 2 sets of 280''s and fore sure and a set of 400's maybe 2 ! we hone until my meter says it's right ! and we hand Hone !!! you want to wear out a set of Good Guns ? come Hone with me !

?????
Frank's pics show up fine for me.
Maybe it's your computer/internet that's the problem since you have had problems making your pics/links work correctly on this site in the past.

Being an old school machinist this is very cool! Could you rough bore the sleeves in a lathe before installation, to save some time, and wear and tear on your boring machine?

I bought the ol' triple "7" Van Norman 40 years ago and it was well used them, but it bores straight and round , just takes time ! The Trick is the operator knows the old girl well!! It's easier to just bore the sleeves in the block

Re: Making a A460 block Badder!
Wow!!
What size will this one be? I assume the C460 heads and lots of nitrous?
Tell more about the 712 - tall deck block I assume? Iron? aluminum?
What heads? Bore stroke?
What transmission will be used? Don't think a power glide will hold up
Cheers

never bothered as some holes @ 4.650 were showing porosity and I was rushing the job and never thought about it until the sleeves were in
