Okay I just rebuilt this engine, all rockers are zero lashed then quarter turn, headers and exhaust. I heard this noise before I rebuilt it as well and that was with pedestal mount rockers (I checked, they were torqued good before taken off) and it had manifolds. To me, it sounds like the rockers are loose, but I don't understand how they would be after going over each individual one twice. Could it be something else by chance? Any suggestions on what to do/check for? Thank you for any input. You'll probably need to turn your volume up a bit. And this was soon after the initial start...

Have you check the rocker to valvecover clearence? I had my rockers hit them before and it sounded like my valves were out of adjustment, just a thought. MavMan

its a 5.0, the heads are some old 4bbl heads that used to be on the maverick. Stock rocker arms with studs. The emissions tube was removed since it wouldn't work with these heads. The cam is a hydraulic roller, mountaineer/explorer cam. maybe I need more preload with the roller setup than a flat tappet? I will also try to check my clearances on the drivers side, as a lot is needed to check the passenger side with that intake.

These heads were used on a different engine with the same valves, springs, and rocker arms. Here is the style they are...

I haven't ran it too long, it got quieter after running for a little, but it was still making noise.

So 3/4 total? I only did 1/4 since it looked like any more put to much pressure on the valve, but I'll try it.

That sound I herd sounds the same as my 86 F150 it is on it 3rd engine with over 400,000 on the the truck itself and sounds the same way with all 3 engines.Mine has the hydro roller cam to I have 3/4 round of preload on my rockers I think the sound is more from the fuel system on these models more than the rockers. I maybe wrong but I also have my egr system and smog deleted on mine.

Put a long screwdriver on the valve cover....nothing. Put it on the injector, tick tick tick tick tick. I guess that's all it is Smile Now I have to get the timing set right, and I'm kinda ticked off that this thing doesn't have a big improvement in power after everything I've done, maybe I need to do a mass air flow conversion to get the power out of it scratch Thanks for the advice guys! I can sleep knowing that everything is fine
