Im new to the forum, i am going this weekend to pick up a dove-a 460 big block for my 78 f150 custom 4x4 and i am looking for advice on what carburetor would be a good choice for it, im planning on putting a canshaft in it also before motor goes into the truck this is just a truck me and my dad are restoring so i want plenty of power and want it to hit a lick when idling but gonna be driving it pretty regular im sure once we finish it

It depends on ow big you go with the camshaft. If it is a small RV Type, a Holley 600-670cfm would work good.

Its bone stock What would be a good camshaft for some extra power and a good lope ? What carb i buy depends on what cam i go with

A 3310 Holley or a 750 edelbrock would work good

In a stock 70 motor with some compression I'd look at something in the 218-224 at .050 on the intake add 10 degrees on the exhaust on a 110

Stay around .530ish lift if you are going to run stock rockers and make sure to match the springs and retainers to the cam

And use a decent set of headers

It is not listed in their regular listings however, for a suitable catalog camshaft, the CompCams #34-244-4 works well in that type situation.
268/276@.006" - 222/226@.050" - .535"/.535" lift - 110 separation.

^^^^^^^^^That cam is about perfect, and you don't have to worry about cutting the valve guides down to clear the seals either. Be sure and get a strait up timing chain set if you replace the gears, and or degree it in.

If the engine is still at 10.5 Compression, you might want to think about lowering it, to run on pump gas?

You do not want solid lifters that's a hydraulic cam

832-16 is the correct part number.


You need to go look at your part numbers you appear to be ordering for a FE.

Springs you need are 926-16 or 924-16 with retainers 741-16 and locks 611-16

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^This. And on the springs I would go with the single with dampers #926. The other one is a dual spring, and more than you need for that cam. Double check the other part number's, I did not look them up, but they are likely correct.

Check the price on a 1990 or later factory timing chain also. They are supposed to be straight up (not 8 degree's retarded) and double roller.
