how fast should it be ? Empty how fast should it be ?

I have a 66 fairlane with a 460 in it. Seems that everyone thinks the car should be a lot faster than it really is.........you know........everbody used to have one back in the day and it was stock....and ran almost this fast. Now i know the older you get.....the faster you used to go but, would like some feed back on what i have and where i'm going with it. Car was already built when i bought it so i am telling mostly what i've been told about engine ect . engine= 460 with alum.motersports heads...no port work.....comp. roller rockers and lifters...1050 dommy carb with victor intake. cam=comp.34-703-9 4800-7500 rpm . c-6 trans...no brake....ft-brake car. 4.56 gears......tubbed ...29.5 - 10.5w slicks...full cage....traction not a problem. Car has run a best of 6.79 at 101 in the eighth of a mile. In the heat...runs consistant 6.90 at 98. 1.50 sixty ft times. almost forgot....has bte 5500 convertor. Hear is the main question........i shift at 6400 rpm and can only leave at 2800 on the ft-brake........car was set up to run pro with a t-brake...i guess thats why the big stall c .......i shift at 6400 cause even though it will turn up higher...its a every weekend bracket racer and dont have to be fast...just consistant....and it is. Just concerned that something might be wrong with my car....how fast should it be ? thanks in advance for the response !!!

Welcome to the forum...Does the car still have the trans-brake? 101 is good mph for a 6.79 dial...how much does it weigh?

The car runs super good . The people who used to have one,are full of shyt!! I had one of the faster street cars around here back in early 80's. I still have it, it's a 66 Mercury Comet with a 390. Stock it ran 10 flat, after an aluminum intake ..750 double pumper , 3000 stall ,350 gears.tractions bars ,some spring work. .040 over bore, nice little cam swap, and a few other tricks and goodies it ran 8.20's . Only one car back then would beat it on the street,it was a 426 hemi Cuda. Most of the cars back then would blow the tires off and were easy to beat. Do the math on what most had then...no traction ,375 HP pushing 4000lbs. Your car runs great! Don't let stories of yesteryear bother you. I had a guy trying to convince me he had a 66 GTO that would pull the front wheels higher than a coke bottle on G60 tires..389 3-2's and a 4 speed...let's just say , he got waxed real good. I don't think he could have got in the 10's in the 1/8...did look cool spinning in 3 gears though lol! Now the mid to late 80's were different. Everybody started learning that traction was better than spinning those G60's, and NOS hit the scenes. They got serious then.....I got serious about bracket racing then lol! king

I would venture to say, with the brake hooked back up, you might be surprised at what you would pick up...it just depends on what that converter wants...
Regardless, consistancy rules. I fit ain't broke...don't fix it...

I got a similar set up 466 w/DOVE heads, roller & 950 Carb on E-85 69 Mach 1 tips the scales @ 3770 w/driver runs 6.90's @ 100. Bracket race it 250+ passes a year 6000 shift, has run 6.69 on alky, but 6.80's & 6.90's seems to be where I like to be. Dead hooking 17x32 rears with 4-link run S/P class and knock the tree down, dial it tight & let the BBF eat and be waiting at the finish line for the ole pumpmaster to kick in if needed. Got a 3 pane mirror in car to watch the other car, I love running fast cars, the faster the better. lol!
