Sick to my stomach now
Just started to work on my car again, been sittin for a while. Looked in the radiator and notice the level was low, no puddle under the car, that's when I started to get sick to my stomach.
Pulled the oil dipstick and yes it was all rusty. Time to pull the motor.
Drained the oil and saw the rust colored stuff in the pan, man this is going to be expensive.
Pulled the valve covers and pulled off the rockers and pushrods, pushrods look like they've been at the bottom of the ocean. Pulled out the sparkplugs, 2 are all rusted up. Man, this thing is gettin' bad!
I'll let you all know what I find when I dissassemble. Will try to post pics, but haven't had much luck figuring how to post pics yet if anyone would care to give stupid here a tutorial, I'd appreciate it.
Anyway wish me luck, (I already know that's too late!)

Re: Sick to my stomach now
Sorry to hear, Man. Probably a head gasket or a crack that allowed the level in the radiator to equalize with the level in the oil pan over time. Chin up....build a better one.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I had water in my oil pan once...turned out to be a hole in the water pump backing plate as well as the timing cover.

An intake leak would be most likely if you used a performance style gasket.

Right on Dave
You guessed it right!
I just got done pulling the intake and to my stupidity, I forgot to glue up the gaskets.
I won't make that mistake again.
Anyway the valley has a nice rust color to it with some sprinkles of aluminum dust to boot (from the intake?).
I'm just trying to be humerous about this, what else am I going to do?
Well I will try to post pics the next couple of days, you can see where the leaks are , just under the water passages.
I think I'll clean everything up and see how bad it is tommorrow.

Glue it? Putting high tack or rtv on it is what your talking about right?
Making sure I do it right when mine goes together, unless you were talking about the rtv in the four corners of the intake to the block.

OK
Figured the photobucket thing out, thanks to Tbird Guy - that explanation made it easy enough for even me to grasp!
Here's the pics of the silent carnage (Ughhh!)
Well I will clean everything up and see where it takes me.
Will post more pics when I get the motor out and disassembled.

Re: Sick to my stomach now
I'd say get it apart and get it cleaned up. Hopefully it'll look worse than it really is once you get it torn down.
I have a customer who has a 428 Ford in a '64 Galaxie and it's a very cool car. One day his engine spun a rod bearing and when I took the engine apart it was full of water. Not coolant but clear water, rain. We think that what happened was that it filled the pan with at least a gallon while the car was sitting. He didn't know this and he started the engine. It had "oil" pressure but that "oil" had no lubrication properties for at least a little while and so the damage was done.
Did your engine have antifreeze at all? If so, I can't believe it would have rusted everything to that degree. It looks more like rainwater damage. I was lucky in that the 428 got brought in and torn down right away before any corrosion happened. We were fortunate that it didn't sit all winter with a crankcase full of rain.

No antifreeze just tap water , I have to admit if I was smart, I would have drained the radiator when I left it stored, but I guess I'm not that smart. I am now more educated though!
I will find out this afternoon how the inner block looks and report back w/more pics.
I think after this experience, I'll put in some drains on the lower block plugs and drain the water out after racing.
Just refill before going again.
Has anyone else done this? Any drawbacks?

Same here looked in the radiator, saw the level was low, no puddle under the car and then checked the rusty dipstick - Ughhh! The car is always in the garage so no rain on it, just heat cycles daily here in Boca Raton.

Re: Sick to my stomach now
Well I have an update-
Pulled the motor and started the tear down looks like I came out better than expected.
All the cylinders are clean and rust free. I hosed them down w/WD40 right away.
Time to get crackin on this deal!
Hope to have back together before it starts to get cool, at least before hurricane season is over!
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
I was thinking of painting the lifter valley area with some epoxy paint. Any suggestions on what paint to use?
