460 flywheel questions. please help.

Post  dbeers02 on November 26th 2010, 8:42 pm

I have a 1979 466 that I am building. I am thinking of using a 4 or 5 speed behind it. I need to know if a standard transmission flywheel from a 1985 truck will fit a 351m/400 bellhousing or if the Lakewood bellhousing for a 460 will work. The problem is the 79 460 balance. I have to use a 79 or later flywheel. Does anyone know if this will work before I buy this stuff?

I have seen some of the 351m bellhousing on the 460's make the trans pilot bind so you have to run 2 backing plates for the extra clearance....

hope this helps

flywheel

Thanks. I think I will buy the lakewood bellhousing and the 85 flywheel and see if it works. I am thinking that the flywheel will work but I may have to have the flywheel redrilled for an 11 inch clutch. I am betting the 12 inch clutch that the later 460's run wont clear the bellhousing. If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks.
