Welding on aluminum heads? Empty Welding on aluminum heads?

Post  Maddmattmustangs March 5th 2010, 3:20 pm

Is it possible to weld inside combustion chambers of aluminum heads and have it actually stay there and not run out under combustion temps? Kinda got into a discussion about that and my entire shop class thinks its not possible Mad

looking for second opinions

There is not much you can't fix on an aluminum head. Welding a chamber is not a problem.............

if you get the head hot enough for the aluminum weld to run out you will have a bigger problem than the weld running out But like what was said if you prepair the head right the weld will be as strong as the head if not stronger

I hope your shop instructor doesn't hold that same opinion, if he does, I'd switch classes! Laughing Laughing

i weld alum for a living
the head is a cast alum unlike steel is not an issue
but on a cast alum pice the weld it self will be stronger than the
cast it was welded on
welding chambers is common
and if done right will not hurt the head
i belive kasse welded the chambers on a emc motor he done

Am looking at a set of heads on my shelf that were bad hurt in a dropped valve deal. Indy Cylinder Head put in seats, guides and a bit of weld to fix my mistake. Yeah, you can weld them and they will live!

shop instructor and i talked after class about it and he said it can be done and he pointed out a procomp head i could use to prove them wrong with.... god that thing looked like crap i dont know if that aluminum can even be worked with. Be fun buz cutting it in half though.

I was talking about welding chambers on a head like a scj to shrink chamber size and completely unshroud the valves for better flow and efficiency. does that make since?

I'm thinking mr. Kaase already did a pretty good job reshaping and engineering that chamber. Not sure I would be messing with that one.

In principal yes if you have a chamber that needs work you could do this.

I would spend my time in other area's where I could get a better bang for my time spent.

Yes, my engine builder (since I don't have the tools) completely re-constucted the chamber and bowls on one cylinder of a big chebbie boat motor. If its done right, it will work.
